Barepress Blog

Just a matter of size

There is an old - and rather risque saying - "It's not a matter of how big it is; it's what you do with it that counts."

The engine behind Barepress was originally built to replace Wordpress for my personal Blog, Joe's Jottings - 350+ posts, relatively few images, and a fairly slim Wordpress installation. I never really paid much attention to just how much space the installation took up on my server, but for interest I looked up the average install size for a small blog this morning and was given the answer 1-2Gb.

Now Joe's Jottings on Barepress comes in at about 90Mb, including the code and all the associated data. Basically - a 300 post blog site in under 100Mb. 2Mb Markdown encoded posts, about 10Mb of media files. The rest is code, some caching and config files.

And there's no mySQL installation! Whilst it's a 'hidden cost' on shared hosting servers it does still use up processor power and space.
